Things I Know: Thanks to Mars Needs Moms

kids crafts, solar system,

Not so recently we were sent a copy of Mars Needs Moms to review and a solar system craft kit. Life sort of got in the way and then we took our time to create out Solar System, but along the way I’ve learnt some things.

So, this week I know;

* My girls are ever so patient when it comes to their neurotic mother. I wanted to hang our planets and stars with cute twine onto perfectly adorable branches (little branches) and so I didn’t hang them for quite a while as I looked for such perfection. As you can see, I didn’t find it but never fear, the search will go on

* Mars was the Roman god of war and agriculture and Earth’s married to Uranus

* Ellie is very interested in Space and Planets and all things Martian, giving us plenty to learn and explore as we attempt to answer her many (many) questions

Solar system, Solar system craft

* The girls needed this craft kit. Since being here I have found craft too difficult here and with life things – but some paint, Styrofoam balls, stars, glitter and glue makes for two very happy little girls

Solar system craft,

* Painting and crafting calls for concentration and lots of quiet but also fun and laughter

* I needed this craft kit. Not only to give me a kick up the butt to let my girls do these things that they love oh-so-much, but also to reignite my passion for creating and to give me an outlet to experiment, journal, get messy and ‘deal’

* There is a never ending wealth of knowledge to be found about all things space, much of which I had no idea about

* Certain glues eat Styrofoam balls and make sounds like Rice Bubbles as it does, which makes me want to eat rice Bubbles

* This girl thrives on mess and it’s hard not to find it adorable when she gets so much pleasure out of experiencing things with her hands (face, legs, body)

* I mustn’t have paid much attention in class when we did all things space…

* I can sometimes find it hard to let my children craft their way, even though I am a big believer in letting play and skills evolve as well as letting them explore and create however they want to – I found it very hard not to encourage them to cover the whole ball or not to use so many colours

* I love how their plants turned out, white bits, many colours and all, they follow their crafty heart and don’t worry about ‘colouring in the lines’ or doing things the ‘right’ way and I want them to continue to be free to create however they feel led

* We will be doing more craft, more regularly

* I have a sudden urge to buy LOTS of paint, brushes, buttons and anything else remotely crafty

* This impromptu rendition of Twinkle Twinkle while painting starts makes my heart happy

What do you know today?

  1. A reminder to me not to feel to0 pedantic with Miss 5 months when craft starts. I look back and regret now how carefully I controlled the process with Miss 10 – lessons to be learnt from.

  2. I hate the thought of craft – the messiness but once we get going I remember how much I enjoy it and how much they do too. Great post!

  3. I know how you feel in rgards to ‘the right way’. I have to try hard not to interfere with my girls craft – and to also remember that mess is part of the fun – I am forever telling them not to make too much mess! This looks like so much fun!

  4. Ella just adores craft. However, the sooner the warmer weather comes, the sooner I’ll be happy for it to get messier. At least then I can take the 5-in-one craft board outside and she can craft to her hearts content!! 🙂

  5. That craft kit looks like a lot of fun!
