Our Self Love Project

Self Love, Radal Self Love, Mixed Media

I mentioned in my recent post about refocusing that I had a project to do with the girls and I wanted to share a little more about that with you before the month begins, in case there are any of you out there who might be interested in joining us on this journey and also, to have a clear plan laid out for us going forward.

On my recent wanderings through the blogosphere I came upon the Self Love Cleanse shared by Valerie Tookes and inspired by Ali Edwards. It’s a beautiful 21 day journey of self expression and discovery.

For the month of June, my girls and I are going to take photos of ourselves throughout the day and before bed time, we will choose our favourite to print. Once we’ve done that we will glue our photo into our special journal and finish the sentence “I love you today because….” Extending on this, I also intend to write something I loved about each of the girls every day in their journal once they’re done.

For me, this is a new way of looking at myself, a way to learn to shush the negative voices and see the positives. For my girls, I see this project as a way to encourage them to learn to love and appreciate themselves from a young age. For them to see me doing it and knowing that it’s okay to feel proud and good about yourself. For them to start really understanding that beauty is from within, that they are worthy and amazing no matter how they look.

Once the month is over we will read the books together and, hopefully, they will love to look back on the journey time and again.

Does this sound like something you’d love to do, too? If so, you’ll need;

Uses for mini smash folio, SMASH ideas,

* A journal – doesn’t matter if it’s an art journal, a note pad, a scrapbook. Whatever works for you. I decided to buy all three of us Mini SMASH Folios which have printed pages, as having spent some time art journaling, I don’t want to be spending time making backgrounds we’re happy with. I just want to be able to open to the next page and stick the photo in. Once we have our sentence in, there can be some prettification if the mood strikes

* A camera/phone camera

* A printer – colour, black and white, laser it doesn’t matter. At the time of writing this, I am still trying to get my hands on one. Given that my husband works with them day-in-day-out, you wouldn’t think it’d be so hard!

* 5 to 10 minutes a night – to get your photo and thoughts down

I am really looking forward to sharing this experience with Ellie and Kahlei, I can feel the excitement bubbling up and, somehow, I just know this is going to be a wonderful and enlightening project.

I’d love to her if you think you might join in, whether it be for the full month of June, for 21 days or for however many you can manage. Let me know in the comments and if there’s some interest I will add a linky to my wrap up post at the end of June.

Either way, I look forward to sharing my thoughts on this journey with you. If you want to keep up with my thoughts throughout the month you can find me on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram as @bybecky.

  1. oh i love love LOVE this idea! and honestly, what a perfect month to focus on some self love.. because its about now that we are all starting to feel the slide, and i feel like a lot of women i know and read, and myself included are struggling to keep afloat and holding on.. be that because of the weather, not being able to exercise the way we were used to in summer, work pressure, home pressure whatever. So im in.. im totally in.

  2. This is such a great idea. I’ve been thinking along a similar thing to do with my girls. They’ve already started showing a few small signs of self-esteem issues – and I am wanting to spend some time with them, creating something that will reaffirm how valuable they are. I look forward to seeing what unfolds this month for you.

  3. that is such a lovely idea. It is never too early to start nurturing self esteem.

  4. What a beautiful idea !
    My twin boys might be a little young for this but I could do something similar. Can’t wait to hear how it all goes, Becky!

  5. You are giving your girls a real gift here, Becky. Such a wonderful project for you all to share x

  6. What an excellent thing to do. It is so important for all young girls to know their self worth and be confident that they are wonderful people. Through our teenage years and beyond there are often many negative voices from others, society and the media that if they have that strong basis of loving themselves, they will survive.
    Inspirational idea :o)
