We came to the Netflix party reasonably late, I couldn’t see how it would be any benefit and who needs so much choice, anyway?
Eventually, we did a free trial. I was pretty smug, I was certain we wouldn’t use it past that month. And, then Felix was hooked on all things David Attenborough and I kinda loved his animal impressions. The big Munchies settled into some shows that we had to see more of. James and I would snuggle in for a night of binge watching some series or another – something I had heard so much about, yet didn’t really grasp how GOOD it could be.
So, here I am to say that I love Netflix just a little bit and I’ve made a list of five of my must watch shows and a seperate list of James’ – there may be some crossover, I haven’t got his list yet though. I’m interested to see what he says (and if he can manage only 5 – he couldn’t, so we made it six).
Becky’s top 6 MUST WATCH shows on Netflix
1. Orphan Black
I’m still struggling with having finished Orphan Black, if I’m honest. The show follows Sarah Manning who witnesses the suicide of a woman who looks just like her and how that changes her life. So many twists and turns and so much playing on our emotions. It’s worth a watch just to see Tatiana Maslany absolutely smash playing numerous parts to the point where you can tell when she’s playing one character pretending to be another character (one of my favourite things).
2. Stranger Things
We have just finished the second season of Stranger Things, a science fiction series based in fictional town of Hawkins. It is set in the 80’s and is so deliciously ’80’s’. It can be fairly dark, full of suspense and I may or may not have jumped once or twice. One of my favourite things is the development of characters you never expect to like; to the point where they’re up there with your favourites.
3. Orange Is the New Black
OITNB is a comedy drama following Piper Chapman as she goes to prison for a past crime she committed. It’s funny, heart-warming, shocking, dramatic and so much more. Honestly, the end of season 4 crushed me and season 5 stressed me out. While my favourite character can’t return (which made me so mad) I am still ridiculously invested in the lives of these women and so keen for season 6.
4. The Good Place
A much lighter tale than most we have watched recently, on the surface. The Good Place sees Eleanor Shellstrop ‘waking up’ to find herself dead and mistakenly in The Good Place. We follow her as she tries to figure out how to be a better person and earn her place. It is funny, there are puns everywhere and Ted Danson as Michael is AMAZING (seriously, all the heart eyes). It also has deeper moments that get you thinking about life, morality and how you’re doing as a person yourself.
5. A Series of Unfortunate Events
The munchies and I watched this together. I loved watching them figure things out as we watched the Baudelaire children navigate life after a house fire, and their dismay as the adults wouldn’t recognise Count Olaf over and over again. As an adult, it was fun to watch and I found myself keen to snuggle down and see what would happen next. A week doesn’t pass without one child asking when the next season will drop (which might start getting annoying!).
6. Trollhunters: Tales of Arcadia
This is another show I watched with the munchies which quickly became a favourite. We follow Jim, a teen chosen as the Trollhunter to protect the human and troll realms, as he tries to defeat evil and keep his life together at school and home. The series has wrapped up now, are a total of three seasons.
